We all observe children around us passing through the age of puberty and becoming adolescents. Sometimes they do engage in behaviour that might put their health and well-being at risk which are classified as risky behaviours and are very stressful for the person as well as others around. The most common ones being smoking, drinking alcohol, unprotected sexual activities, social media addiction, dangerous driving, and the list goes on. These behaviors learned in adolescence mostly sweep into their adulthood too shaping their adult behavior.
There are so many factors associated with risk behavior such as negative life events, peer pressure, anxiety, low self esteem, fear, anger, irritation and even depression. When these conditions are left untreated for a long time, it can be very dangerous for someone’s health and the consequences cost way too much.
During this time of puberty as they mature to make their own identity and reach adulthood, sometimes they just make quick decisions to show off among peers. It being a very crucial age, where they experience so many hormonal or physical changes, they become easy targets to misinformations from friends or social media which is the most dangerous part.
Prevention is better than cure. So it is always better to be aware as an adolescent or as a parent. Parents can guide them about this phase from their own experiences. Other than that, goes without saying, professional help is always an option easily available on our phones and otherwise.
